System issues causing hot water tank failures.

Ever wondered why some hot water tanks last longer than others?

The three hot water tanks on the left were all in pristine condition after 5 years yet all the tanks on the right were leaking and had to be replaced.

This is one of the first signs of a poorly operating plumbing system and it can be easily seen at the water heater. If your water heaters are not lasting and leaks or corrosion are visible at the connections it is time to have your plumbing system checked as these symptoms more importantly have the potential to reduce the life expectancy of your piping system as well.

The oversizing of hot water circulators is problem that should be not be occurring.

Unfortunately this seems to be a common problem in the plumbing systems. The pumps in this image were larger than the return pipe which immediately rang alarm bells.  The pumps were also operating on the maximum level.  Measuring the velocity of the circulated water supply and the required performance of the water heating equipment we were able to reduce the all the pumps speeds to the minimum setting providing a calculated energy saving of over $2500 per year.  Further energy savings could be made if smaller pumps were installed.

pumps were also operating on speed 3 the maximum level.
